Sebastian heard the postern gate slam behind Elanor as she fled.

Darkness descended. He struck out wildly in the dark with the poker, valiantly trying to hold off the soldiers to give Elanor enough time to make her escape. Muffled curses told him that the poker had struck true, but his arm was tiring and a cold sweat dripped into his eyes.

Before long, Sebastian faltered and dropped to one knee. The soldiers rushed upon him and wrenched the poker from his hands. Hard hands seized him and dragged him up. He let himself go limp, pretending he had been knocked unconscious as he had seen Jack do earlier, hoping the soldiers would loosen their grip. They slammed manacles around his wrists.

As they dragged him up the stairs, Sebastian wondered what they would do to him. Despair filled him. Their brave quest was not meant to end like this, the four of them broken apart and alone. And Sebastian in chains, a prisoner.

His father would be so ashamed.
